Things To Do

Discover the Beauty of Arbor Vitae's Northwoods

❋ Off Road Exploration

The Lakeland ATV/UTV Club maintains hundreds of miles of well-groomed trail connecting Arbor Vitae, Woodruff, and Minocqua—and the trails connect directly to your property. The Little Rice Trail (21 miles of woods trail plus 15 miles of road routes in the Oneida County Forest) is a local favorite. For something different, Area 31 UTV Park, a former Yamaha testing facility, offers various one-way trails of all terrains and guided rides for riders of every skill level. A&M UTV Rentals in Arbor Vitae is less than half a mile from the major routes if you need to rent.

❋ On The Water

Minutes from your cabin, Big Arbor Vitae Lake (with a public boat launch 3 miles away) is your gateway to thousands of acres of water. The Minocqua Chain of Lakes—nearly 6,000 acres across seven connected lakes—offers endless possibilities: fishing for walleye, musky, and bass; paddling by kayak or paddleboard; swimming off pristine beaches; or simply drifting on a pontoon as bald eagles circle overhead. Summer or winter, water is the heartbeat of this place.

❋ Museums and Wildlife Activities

Arbor Vitae's logging heritage runs deep—the town was established in the 1890s and over 150 years of timber work left the landscape you're exploring today. Just a short drive away, the Dr. Kate Museum (in Woodruff, about 11 minutes) tells the inspiring true story of Dr. Kate Newcomb, who rallied the entire town to collect pennies to build a hospital in the early 1900s. Outside stands the World's Largest Penny—a quirky roadside landmark open 24/7 that commemorates that remarkable community effort. About 17 minutes away, the Wildwood Wildlife Park & Nature Center (near Minocqua) lets you walk among rescued raptors, turtles, and native Northwoods wildlife with knowledgeable guides. In winter, Minocqua Winter Park (about 15 minutes) offers 80 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails and 12 kilometers of snowshoe trails. These attractions pair perfectly with the Northwoods' outdoor spirit—a day of trail exploration balanced with a little history and culture keeps the retreat feeling complete.

❋ Hiking Trails

Just minutes from your cabin, the Raven Trail in nearby Woodruff offers 11 miles of scenic forest hiking through the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. Choose your adventure based on difficulty: the Yellow Loop (1.4 miles) winds serenely through hemlock forests along Hemlock Lake; the Green and Blue Loops (2.3–3.1 miles) offer intermediate hiking with rolling terrain and lake views; and the Red Loop (4.2 miles) challenges expert hikers with steep hills. The trails follow old logging roads through mixed forests of balsam fir, white pine, and white birch, winding past three pristine lakes—Clear, Inkpot, and Hemlock—where you might spot bald eagles, ruffed grouse, deer, and fisher tracks. A paved multi-use trail connects the Clear Lake boat landing to Indian Mounds Campground for those seeking easier walks. In winter, many trails transform into groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe routes. Trail pass required ($25 annual or $5 day pass) for those 16+ using the groomed trails.

After Loon Delight Art and Craft Show

If you're staying in early August, don't miss Minocqua's After Loon Delight Art & Craft Show at Torpy Park downtown. Held the day after Mercer's Loon Day, this beloved summer tradition fills the lakefront with 75+ local artisans and craftspeople selling handmade treasures—original artwork, pottery, jewelry, wood creations, leather goods, and more. The show runs 9am to 4pm rain or shine, with live music drifting across the beach level and food concessions fueling browsers. It's the kind of event where you can wander for hours, discover something you didn't know you needed, and support the artists who make the Northwoods creative community thrive. Bring a friend, grab coffee at Cafe Sonder beforehand, and spend the morning celebrating handcrafted beauty on the water.
